ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A dog is recovering after a house fire on the 1200 block of Fremont Street Wednesday morning—firefighters confirmed that two other dogs died as crews controlled the blaze in 10 minutes and medics cared for the survivor for over 20 minutes.  WSBT

CRIME NEWS

  • Jaylin Micou, 37, died on August 23 from injuries he sustained in a shooting outside a South Bend bar on Portage Avenue on August 10. South Bend Police charged 21-year-old Keithus Giden III with murder—he is held at St. Joseph County Jail without bond.  WSBT
  • South Bend police said 35-year-old Martel Scott was sentenced to 16 years in jail for selling meth in South Bend and Mishawaka between July and October 2024 — police found about five pounds of meth and more than $200,000 in cash in his house and storage unit.  WSBT
  • Justin Bonham pleaded guilty to a probation violation and unlawful carrying of a gun in a case linked to a deadly shooting at a Best Western in Mishawaka in January—he shot 44-year-old Anthony Korolis out of fear for his safety and received a three-year prison sentence.  WSBT

  • ABC57 Morning Anchor Jordan Hatfield interviewed South Bend Mayor James Mueller on Wednesday to review local changes and priorities. He covered goals for South Bend Community Schools students, recent body camera footage, and a possible new wheel tax—issues that may affect future policy in Michiana.  ABC 57
  • On Wednesday, South Bend International Airport held a demonstration of a new app called GoodMaps that gives travelers digital maps and features like camera positioning, audio feedback, and arrows for deaf users—making it the first airport in Indiana to use this tool. Samantha Spencer said the app is already used in many public places across the country.  ABC 57

  • Freshman quarterback CJ Carr beat out Kenny Minchey for the starting role at Notre Dame and will lead the team in a season opener against Miami, with coaches and teammates praising his poise despite his inexperience—he will have support from Jeremiah Love, Jadarian Price and an upgraded offensive line.  ABC 57
