COMMUNITY NEWS

  • University of Notre Dame students are partnering with HEART 9/11 to host the seventh annual ND110 event—participants will climb 110 flights of stairs at Notre Dame Stadium from 5 to 9 p.m. on Sept. 10 to honor the first responders of 9/11, and anyone can join for a $15 fee.  South Bend Tribune

CRIME NEWS

  • South Bend Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit said it is investigating a Tuesday night incident after shots fired damaged a parked vehicle and an apartment building at Jefferson Apartments on Rue Bossuet Street—authorities later found spent casings on S. 28th Street with no injuries reported.  ABC 57

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Success Academy at the Boys and Girls Club in South Bend saw a nearly 40% rise in IREAD scores as 70% of its 3rd graders passed in 2025 compared to 33% in 2024—WSBT 22’s Operation Education examined the improvement on September 3.  WSBT
  • On September 3, community leaders and school officials teamed with Notre Dame football star Leonard Moore to launch a new biweekly program aimed at improving student attendance at Foley’s in Notre Dame Stadium, where students from Clay and Edison middle schools heard a pep talk. The program was started after data showed nearly 38% of local students were chronically absent in the 2023–24 school year—officials expect it will build better attendance habits in the community.  WSBT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Braun announced today in South Bend that Abby Gray is the new Office of the Utility Consumer Counselor Commissioner—she will review utility profits and seek cost-saving measures so that investors bear more costs instead of ratepayers. NIPSCO welcomed the appointment—pledging to work with Gray to ensure safe, reliable service for Hoosiers.  ABC 57
  • South Bend is repaving Old U.S. 31 from Kern Road to the city limits to convert it to a three-lane road with a center turn lane—drivers should expect delays as the work, which began September 2, will finish in early October if weather permits.  South Bend Tribune

  • Notre Dame Athletics and Under Armour will host Irish Jam, a free event celebrating the upcoming men's and women's basketball seasons at Eddy Street Commons on October 3. The fan fest will feature games, contests and team addresses from noon to 6 p.m.  South Bend Tribune
