- ➤ Brenda Matuszkiewicz retires as executive director of the Court Appointed Special Advocates program after leading the organization for 22 years to help abused and neglected children in St. Joseph County. Stephanie Shumaker, with 16 years in the program, will take over the role—she is set to continue its growth and important work. South Bend Tribune
- ➤ Downtown South Bend welcomed pets for September First Fridays as it celebrated the Dog Days of Summer theme—guests enjoyed dog trick exhibitions, face painting, a color station and merchandise sales, dined at pet-friendly restaurants and listened to live music by The Starving Artists while Michigan Street between Washington and Wayne was closed from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. WSBT
- ➤ The Youth Service Bureau hosted the Over the Edge event yesterday at the Robertson’s Building—participants rappelled down the building to raise $100,000 for programs that help youth facing homelessness, abuse and crisis. The funds will support vital safety and shelter services. WSBT

- ➤ Angelica Cavazos, 33, was charged with two Level 6 felony firearm offenses after an Aug. 29 altercation near Career Academy that saw her allegedly fire her gun and follow a victim’s car while her child was nearly hit (St. Joseph Superior Court documents) with her first court hearing set for Sept. 24 (court records). ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ South Bend officials are upgrading garbage trucks with sensors that record temperature every 10—15 seconds to find areas hit hardest by heat. The data will guide plans to invest in more trees and cooling centers in urban areas. WSBT

- ➤ South Bend officials report that the near-record $1.7 billion Powerball jackpot, the third-largest in US lottery history, is set for tonight's drawing at 11 p.m.—ticket sales ended about one hour earlier after a $2 million second-place win in Detroit. WSBT

- ➤ South Bend Fire Department Chief of Fire Prevention Derek Erquhart said on ABC57 Morning News that using proper kitchen equipment can help lessen the rise in kitchen fires seen this summer—he also explained what steps residents should take if a fire starts. ABC 57
