COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the Beverly Shores Depot enters a new 100-year lease with partners NICTD and Indiana Landmarks that will secure the museum and art gallery as a long-term tenant — keeping the station active on the South Shore Line. NICTD will provide an initial $50,000 grant for repairs while Indiana Landmarks offers grant support and advice for future work.  ABC 57
  • South Bend Heritage Foundation is advancing phase two of its affordable housing plan on West Wayne Street—adding two-bedroom rental units to address local demand. The city is cutting red tape to support the project—phase three may break ground as early as Spring 2026.  WSBT
  • Local venues offer community meals this week with burger night on Sept. 18 at Galien American Legion Post 344 and fish, chicken or shrimp frys plus an all-you-can-eat spaghetti supper on Sept. 19 at sites in South Bend and Mishawaka—a pancake and biscuit breakfast is planned on Sept. 27 at Galien.  South Bend Tribune
  • South Bend will see the opening of the new Monarca Event Center next weekend in a 15,000 square foot building on South Main Street that was formerly the Restore building (now renovated to host weddings, graduations, birthdays and quinceañeras for up to 450 guests).  WSBT
  • The Humane Society of St. Joseph County announced its 2025 Disco Gala set for Oct 11 at Four Winds Casino in South Bend. The event will aim to raise over $100,000 for programs supporting homeless and abused animals and will include a cocktail hour, dinner, awards presentations, live entertainment and auctions—featuring items like Notre Dame Women’s Basketball season passes and a $5000 orthodontics package.  ABC 57

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Today, Midwest Premium Kosher holds an open house from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at 221 W. Wayne St.—the event includes a ribbon cutting, free samples and community activities while the store opens daily except Saturday.  ABC 57

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Morris Performing Arts Center in South Bend is hosting Whispers from the Past: Ghost Tours—an hour-long guided journey for young adults that starts Friday and runs until Oct. 23—where participants learn about the theater's haunted history.  ABC 57

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A partnership between the Career Academy Network and the Boys & Girls Club led Success Academy to jump 36.7 percentage points in reading proficiency in one year—showing strong local support for better education. South Bend schools are also making gains as they work to meet the state goal of 95% reading proficiency by 2027.  South Bend Tribune
  • Ayden Butts of LaVille Jr/Sr High School was named the Tribune Student of the Week for Sept. 8—readers chose him for his hard work and respect for staff. Nominees included a student from Mishawaka High School, and readers will vote for next week's nominee on Monday.  South Bend Tribune

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • On Friday, South Bend held the groundbreaking for phase two of The Cascade, a new condominium project in downtown set to add more units and extend for 20 months—expected to complete by mid-2027. The project will boost the east bank neighborhood with more local businesses and enhanced city living.  ABC 57
  • New data shows that home sale prices in St. Joseph County dropped in June, with the median price falling to $206,562—down 7.8% from May's $224,125. Single-family homes sold for a median of $207,812 while condominiums and townhomes dropped to $180,000 as overall home sales rose to 533 properties totaling $92.9 million.  South Bend Tribune

SPORTS NEWS

  • Leonard Moore, a star cornerback for Notre Dame football, is listed as questionable for Saturday’s home game against Purdue after injuring his right ankle early in the Texas A&M game—he returned later to finish the contest. Additional players are also questionable and the defense has struggled, so the team will confirm more details before the game.  South Bend Tribune
