ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A South Bend school bus jumped a curb and drove through a front yard on Indiana Avenue on Monday morning with grade school children onboard while the transportation department investigated the incident—new construction barricades nearby added challenges and the contracted driver faces disciplinary action.  WSBT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Brian Maynard of Forté coffee said that early August, 50% tariffs on Brazilian goods forced his company to switch half of its best-selling blend from Brazilian to Honduran coffee and raise whole bean prices by 20% and decaf prices by 25% — he gets most of his coffee from Theta Ridge Coffee in South Bend.  ABC 57
  • Costco is recalling Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene sparkling wine because the bottles may shatter even when not in use—bottles sold from April 25 to August 26 were available in Indiana and other states, and customers are advised to dispose of them carefully for a refund.  South Bend Tribune
  • Today, Blaze Pizza at Eddy Street Commons closed its doors for good after serving locals since 2015—WSBT 22 did not receive a comment from the chain.  WSBT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today at 1:30 p.m., the Studebaker Museum hosts a Speaker Series event titled 'Think it's New? Think Again! Ephemeral Solutions to Eternal Problems' in the Wiekamp Auditorium, sponsored by the Campisi Family Education Fund—independent exhibit developer Mary Seelhorst will compare old projects from Popular Mechanics with modern ideas. Standard admission is $2 while Studebaker National Museum and campus members enter free and refreshments will be served after the event.  ABC 57

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. EPA delayed new steel mill pollution standards for two more years, meaning companies must meet the tougher rules by 2027 while environmental groups sue to enforce stronger measures—local residents face ongoing poor air quality from coal-burning mills. The decision raises health concerns and deepens the fight for cleaner air in Northwest Indiana.  South Bend Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On September 16, the St. Joseph County Area Plan Commission gave an unfavorable recommendation to a proposed $12 billion data center in New Carlisle—commission members questioned the project's resource use, noise, water usage, and rezoning plan as the proposal will head to the County Council.  WSBT
  • Indiana BMV now offers over 140 plate types for vehicles, including college, military, and organization plates — blackout plates became available on Aug. 8 at $45 while most others cost between $5 and $15, with an extra $45 fee to personalize; plates can be purchased online, at a BMV Connect kiosk, or at any BMV branch.  South Bend Tribune

SPORTS NEWS

  • Notre Dame is 0-2 but has a bright spot on offense with Malachi Fields—a former Virginia transfer who has recorded eight receptions for 125 yards in two games and boosts the passing game with his size and strength. Redshirt freshman quarterback C.J. Carr threw for 5 yards and three touchdowns in those games, offering Fields a key role as the offense looks to improve.  ABC 57
  • At Notre Dame Stadium on Saturday night, Texas A&M safety Bryce Anderson was injured after a collision with Notre Dame tight end Eli Raridon, who said he prayed for Anderson's full recovery as Anderson confirmed on social media he was all good.  South Bend Tribune
