EDUCATION NEWS

  • The South Bend Community School Corporation tabled the decision to terminate Riley High School girls basketball coach Karl Columbus at the Sept. 17 board meeting pending further investigation into an incident when he reportedly called a player 'zombie' and removed her from the team—officials will review the matter further before taking action.  South Bend Tribune
  • The Better Business Bureau advised college students to use credit cards only for emergencies—compare terms before applying—protect identities by shredding documents and using strong passwords—and take advantage of discounts, meal plans, and used textbooks to manage costs. It also urged students to build realistic budgets that include income, expenses, and a cushion for unexpected costs.  South Bend Tribune
  • South Bend Community Schools held a budget work session yesterday at 4:30 p.m. in the Brown Administration Building before the school board meeting—where the CFO reviewed past savings efforts to guide planning for the 2026 budget, which includes nearly $220 million in the general fund with 61% for educational expenses. This session was the first of three planned meetings.  WSBT
  • At Wednesday's school board meeting, local residents discussed a Riley High teacher who was listed on Attorney General Todd Rokita's Eyes on Education website after posting a comment about activist Charlie Krik's death. Indiana Governor Mike Braun later stated that while free speech must be protected, statements inciting political violence will be reviewed by the Secretary of Education — ensuring proper oversight.  ABC 57

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Bend officials held their final working session after 16 public hearings and months of resident input as they prepared for the 2026 budget vote. The final vote is set for October 13 and leaders are planning for reduced funding that may affect projects such as electric vehicle chargers—a change that will impact several city departments including the Office of Sustainability.  ABC 57
  • The St. Joseph County Area Plan Commission voted 7-0 to recommend against changing the zoning for a proposed data center on 1,057 acres owned by Mall-O-Manor LLC. The rezoning plan will go to the County Council on Sept. 23—affecting nearby farm fields and homes.  ABC 57
  • St. Joseph County and South Shore Line are working on a new station in New Carlisle to help local workers and enhance tourism. The county chose a site about 10 minutes from downtown, and the station is planned for 2027-2028 with shuttle service options (including connections to Hudson Lake).  WSBT

SPORTS NEWS

  • South Bend Tribune sports staff released their predictions for week 5 of high school football, covering Indiana and Michigan matchups. The picks by Austin Hough, Kyle Smedley and Scott Davidson—who share similar season records—highlight trends for key upcoming contests.  South Bend Tribune

  • Notre Dame football will host Purdue at Notre Dame Stadium this Saturday, and four players are in focus for a must-win game.   • Noah Bontrager, a Westview senior and Notre Dame commit, will race Saturday at New Prairie’s high school cross country invitational as he aims to break the 15-minute mark on the course. Over 2,500 runners from more than 100 schools will compete in nine races starting at 8 a.m. (admission is $6).  South Bend Tribune
