- ➤ More than 200 people attended a candlelight vigil in Mishawaka today to remember Charlie Kirk with prayers and songs offered as the community gathered—rescheduled after bomb threats led to its cancellation. Organizer Nikki Zellmer said the event brought together residents and received police and volunteer support to keep it peaceful. WSBT

- ➤ Residents reported fake phone calls claiming their bills are overdue and that service will be shut off—Mishawaka Utilities says the calls are scams and instructs people to hang up and avoid sharing credit card information. WSBT

- ➤ South Bend native Federico Rodriguez is showcasing his artwork at IU South Bend's Civil Rights Heritage Center during Hispanic Heritage Month. The exhibit, which uses reclaimed materials like mouse traps and red bandanas (reflecting his family's journey from Mexico), will be open to the public through December and is set to lead into mural painting classes for local youth at Saint Mary's College next month. - ➤ Indie rock band The Bergamot will release their new album, Give Love Away, in a concert at Leighton Concert Hall with the Notre Dame Children's Choir today at 8 p.m.—The band returned to ABC57 on Thursday after a two-year absence and previewed a sample of the album. ABC 57
- ➤ Iconic actor, director and environmentalist Robert Redford died Tuesday, Sept. 16 at age 89. South Bend native Sydney Pollack directed seven films starring Redford and his brother Bernie Pollack designed costumes for 18 movies they worked on together. South Bend Tribune
- ➤ Linebacker Lounge in South Bend was named one of The Athletic's top 10 college bars in the US for 2025. Founded in 1962 by former Notre Dame linebacker Mo Pattios—who helped boost its local appeal—the bar is less than a mile from the Notre Dame stadium and remains a favorite for students, alumni and sports fans. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Notre Dame will host a summit on AI, Faith and Human Flourishing from Sept. 22 to 25—examining the impact of AI on education, relationships and other areas. The event will launch a framework called DELTA and include a keynote speech by Professor Meghan Sullivan livestreamed at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. South Bend Tribune
- ➤ South Bend Community School Corporation CFO Ahnaf Tahmid rolled out the second draft for the 2026 budget that expects nearly $211 million—an increase of $7 million from last year—and includes spending cuts like ending the SSC contract to save nearly $5 million. The School Board will hold a public hearing on October 6th to review plans that aim to boost salaries and address teacher vacancies. WSBT
- ➤ South Bend Community School Corporation is recruiting teachers and bus drivers and will hold a hiring event on Sept. 29 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Brown Administration Building—Superintendent Mansour Eid said the district has 28 teacher vacancies and needs about 15 bus drivers while enrollment is 12,941 students. - ➤ The St. Joseph County Area Plan Commission unanimously opposed Mall-o-Manor, LLC’s request to rezone 1,057 acres of farmland in New Carlisle for a data center, so the petition will go to County Council Tuesday — with over 20 local residents and the town council voicing concerns over conflicts with current plans — while economic officials highlight the potential for 300-400 full-time jobs. - ➤ Some southern Saint Joseph County residents received letters from UKA-Group about a planned wind project covering 5000 acres and are asking for more details—County Director of Economic Development Bill Schalliol said he is working to get answers as a UKA-Group representative is expected to visit soon. - ➤ Notre Dame defensive end Josh Burnham has played only a few defensive snaps against Texas A&M due to fall camp injuries, and coach Marcus Freeman said he will see more reps as he recovers—while the team has recorded just one sack in two games.
