COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Yesterday in South Bend, Habitat for Humanity held a key ceremony for the final home built in honor of Notre Dame President Father Bob Dowd, completed with hundreds of volunteer hours. Long-time volunteer Gary discovered he had been working on his own house — a surprise that filled the day with smiles as President Jim Williams celebrated the moment.  WSBT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Toyota announced nearly 600,000 Toyota and Lexus vehicles are being recalled because instrument panel screens might fail to show key safety warnings — the recall affects several 2023-25 models including Toyota's Venza, Crown, RAV4, Camry and others as well as certain Lexus vehicles.  ABC 57
  • A new Entrepreneurship Hub named Momentum opened in downtown South Bend with private offices—flexible coworking memberships, meeting rooms, a podcast studio and coffee bar. The hub will host workshops, keynote speakers and panel discussions as local entrepreneurs collaborate on community solutions.  WSBT
  • Employees of Raydia Food Group received a letter telling them the company will stop operations today—leaving many local restaurants, schools and commercial kitchens to seek new vendors to fill the gap—causing a significant impact on the area's food supply.  WSBT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • South Bend Community School Corp is holding town hall meetings to gather public feedback on a plan to transition from K-8 to K-6 schools for the 2026-27 school year—no vote will be taken at the sessions. The meetings will be held at several district schools between Sept. 22 and Sept. 30 to let community members share their thoughts.  South Bend Tribune
  • Mason Pearson of NorthWood High School was voted Tribune Student of the Week for Sept. 15th by readers — he was chosen from nominees at four local schools.  South Bend Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After more than 60 years in the County-City Building, South Bend will move its city offices to the new City Hall at the former community school headquarters on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard on October 13. The move will consolidate over 200 employees from three buildings, include upgrades such as a customer service center and new elevators, and cost $10 million—city officials say it will improve access to services.  ABC 57
  • Former U.S. Secretary Pete Buttigieg—who grew up in South Bend—spoke at IU Auditorium in Bloomington on Sept. 18 and said his hometown shaped his political views and family values as he condemned gerrymandering and political violence.  South Bend Tribune

SPORTS NEWS

  • On September 19, high school football games were played in the South Bend area and across the state, and scores were reported for many matchups — the list includes results from both local and state contests with teams winning by wide margins.  South Bend Tribune
  • ABC57 will air its Kickoff show from 10 a.m. to noon today—featuring interviews and insights before Notre Dame hosts Purdue at 3:30 p.m. The broadcast will review the Irish's recent win and highlight key player Malachi Fields’ strong effort after his 125-yard game.  ABC 57
  • Saint Joseph won the Sectional 4 girls golf tournament on Sept. 19 at Knollwood Country Club when they beat Penn (329 to 332), with senior Marley Dunham posting a 75 as the top individual score. Other area teams (Northridge, La Porte, and Marian) advanced to regionals, and the Huskies will compete at Sandy Pines on Sept. 27.  South Bend Tribune
