  • This week community meals are scheduled with Burger Night on Sept. 25 at Galien American Legion Post, a fish, chicken or shrimp fry on Sept. 26 at a post in Mishawaka, and Kitchen Open plus a Polish Dinner Buffet on Sept. 26 in South Bend. Pancake & Biscuit Breakfast is on Sept. 27 and Oct. 4, a full Fish Fry runs on Oct. 3 in South Bend, and Tyner Fish Fry will be served on Oct. 4 at Tyner Community Building—costs and menus vary by event.  South Bend Tribune

CULTURE NEWS

  • South Bend’s Near Northwest Neighborhood hosted its 21st annual art cafe, drawing 1,000 visitors — including 30 local artisans and 15 booths. The event featured a free horse-drawn wagon ride, a kids’ area with games, live music zones, and mainly Mexican-style food vendors while supporting a nonprofit that builds affordable housing.  ABC 57

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jeanette McCullough, the South Bend Community School Corp board president, was elected as Region 2 director on the Indiana School Boards Association board during the Sept. 15 Delegate Assembly — she will represent counties including St. Joseph, Elkhart, Marshall, Kosciusko, LaGrange and LaPorte. Superintendent Mansour Eid said her appointment is expected to benefit local schools.  South Bend Tribune
  • The Tribune is asking readers to vote for Student of the Week nominees from LaVille Jr/Sr, Northridge, Adams, and Mishawaka high schools—voting is open from today until noon on Sept. 25 and the winner will appear Friday online and Monday in print.  South Bend Tribune
  • In 1956, Washington High School football player Tom Makowski was reinstated after violating the ban on wearing non-school club jackets—School City pupil personnel director Gordon E. Weist said his good record led to the decision.  South Bend Tribune

  • Columnist Tom Noie begins Part Two of his series on the top 25 Notre Dame football moments from the past 25 seasons—this installment highlights key plays such as Robert Hughes’s score that snapped a USC losing streak in 2010 and Terrail Lambert’s decisive interceptions in 2006, with the countdown spanning five segments in upcoming Sunday editions.  South Bend Tribune
  • After a lopsided loss to Notre Dame, Purdue coach Barry Odom said his team struggled on defense and had problems on offense and special teams—he said they will work to improve ahead of future games.  South Bend Tribune
  • Notre Dame football remained at No. 21 in the US LBM Coaches Poll after defeating unranked Purdue 56-30 at Notre Dame Stadium — the Irish, now 1-2, remain the only two-loss team ranked and will face unranked Arkansas on Sept 27.  South Bend Tribune
