COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community meals this week offer many dining choices from a salad bar luncheon at Sunnyside Presbyterian Church on Oct. 2 at 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and a Polish dinner buffet at MR Falcons on Oct. 3 from 5 to 7 p.m.—other events include burger nights, fish fries, pancake breakfasts and more at various local venues with prices from $4 to $17.  South Bend Tribune
  • Imani and Henny are two five‑month‑old shepherd mix sisters recently surrendered to South Bend's Animal Resource Center who show promise in training and get along well with dogs and children — they may need a slower introduction to cats and can be adopted separately or together.  WSBT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The first day of Fusion Fest brought a mix of global music, art, and food to Howard Park on September 27—visitors experienced live performances and markets while the festival continued on September 28.  South Bend Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Centre Branch library in South Bend reopened on September 2 after a $1.5 million renovation that added new study rooms, energy-efficient lights, furniture, and an outdoor garden with a StoryWalk—LaSalle Branch remains closed for similar work while plans for a new Western Branch move ahead.  South Bend Tribune
  • Sariah Smith from Mishawaka High School was named the Tribune's Student of the Week for Sept.22 by local readers—she was chosen from nominees at Mishawaka, Northridge, Adams and LaVille Jr/Sr for her exceptional leadership and community service.  South Bend Tribune
  • ND-LEEF hosted Science Sunday at St. Patrick's County Park, offering interactive demonstrations and activities on topics such as underwater robots, native plants, and live fish from the St. Joseph River plus connecting community members with real scientists.  WSBT

SPORTS NEWS

  • IHSAA has set the girls soccer pairings for South Bend teams with games beginning Tuesday, October 7—top-ranked Mishawaka Marian will face South Bend Saint Joseph in Class 2A while other brackets in Classes 1A, 2A, and 3A have been drawn.  South Bend Tribune
  • IHSAA has revealed the sectional pairings for South Bend boys soccer teams, with Class 3A matchups beginning Oct. 6 and Concord set to face Mishawaka in a semifinal at Northridge—pairings for Classes 2A and 1A are also scheduled through Oct. 11 as the tournament advances.  South Bend Tribune
  • Voting is open for the Week 6 South Bend Tribune Football Player of the Week poll until Oct. 2 at 11:59 p.m. Voters can choose from 13 nominees based on recent game performances (the nominees are listed alphabetically by school).  South Bend Tribune
  • The City of South Bend will host the third annual South Bend Global Cup at Boehm Park on October 4 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. — the one-day soccer tournament celebrates local diversity and sports. A Procession of Flags will kick off the event on October 3 at 6:00 p.m. from Gridiron Plaza along Michigan Street — food trucks will be available throughout the day.  ABC 57
  • Former Notre Dame cornerback Jaden Mickey, now at Boise State, sustained a concussion during Saturday’s game when he left the field on a utility cart—hospital tests showed no further issues. Coach Spencer Danielson added that Mickey maintained a positive mindset despite the injury.  South Bend Tribune
  • On Saturday, Notre Dame beat Arkansas 56 to 13 despite missing cornerback Leonard Moore because of an ankle sprain, and two freshmen—safety Ethan Long and tight end James Flanigan—played their first snaps.  South Bend Tribune
  • The IHSAA boys tennis state tournament begins Tuesday, Sept. 30 with six South Bend area teams including South Bend Saint Joseph and Penn. The sectional draw was revealed Sunday, Sept. 28 and match times from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.—with play continuing through Oct. 2—set the schedule for the tournament.  South Bend Tribune
