COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Food Bank of Northern Indiana announced its October mobile food distribution schedule that will offer free, pre-packaged food at drive-thru sites—each household will receive one box or bag at various locations in and around South Bend. This service will be available while supplies last.  ABC 57

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Meta said they were not behind the proposed $12 billion data center near New Carlisle—speculation linked the tech company to the project—and St. Joseph County postponed its vote on rezoning land between Timothy and Walnut Roads for further review.  WSBT
  • New restaurant chains are coming to Eddy Street Commons as Bibibop Asian Grill will replace Blaze Pizza and Tous les Jours will take the former McAllister's Deli—each chain set to bring new international flavors to the area. More details on opening dates will be shared in the coming months.  WSBT
  • Academy Sports + Outdoors opened Monday, Sept 29 in Mishawaka at Wilshire Plaza by taking over the old Burlington space. Shoppers saw a wide range of sporting gear including fishing, hunting and fitness supplies.  South Bend Tribune
  • A spokesperson for Cava said the chain will open a South Bend location next year — details on the opening date remain unconfirmed.  ABC 57

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Monday, Life Treatment Centers dedicated a new mural on the front of its South Michigan Street building in downtown South Bend, spray-painted by local artist Alex Ann Allen. The artwork, completed in six days, represents hope, resilience — and transformation in recovery.  WSBT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Friday, Sept. 26, local officials announced that two Michiana educators are finalists for next year’s Indiana Teacher of the Year award—one from Mishawaka and one from La Porte—joining current honor recipient Graciela Miranda from Pike High. The finalists, an 8th grade math teacher at Schmuker Middle School and a veteran 4th grade teacher, will compete for this prestigious state honor.  ABC 57
  • South Bend Community Schools hosted a job fair today to fill critical staff vacancies for teachers, bus drivers, and custodians—officials said another fair will be held at the end of October to ease a shortage of school bus drivers.  ABC 57

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County leaders say work on the roundabout at the closed Beech—Cleveland Road intersection in Granger is progressing as planned and it is expected to reopen by October 18.  WSBT
  • Crews are building a roundabout at the intersection of Beech and Cleveland Roads in eastern St. Joseph County, and the road has been closed for about three months. County leaders say the work is progressing well and the intersection will reopen by October 18 — a change that will improve local traffic.  WSBT
  • Gary Goddard, a retired South Bend building inspector and carpenter, said he found that the Mishawaka Post Office on East Third Street is not ADA compliant because its doors are hard to open and pose safety risks; he raised his concerns with the post office and ADA officials but has seen no changes yet.  WSBT
  • Faith leaders and locals gathered on Monday at the Miami Correctional Facility — known as the Speedway Slammer — to protest its change into an immigration detention center before the first ICE detainees arrive. The center will soon hold up to 1,000 detainees following a federal deal announced in August and a $15 million approval by state officials on Sept 17.  ABC 57

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Notre Dame football team reached its 500th win after beating Arkansas 56 to 13—freshman quarterback C.J. Carr led the Irish offense. Arkansas fired head coach Sam Pittman and three defensive coaches after the loss.  ABC 57
  • Notre Dame football coach Marcus Freeman said he was relieved after hearing that former cornerback Jaden Mickey, who suffered a head injury during a Boise State game on Saturday night, is okay—Mickey was diagnosed with a concussion after testing and may play in the upcoming game if his health permits.  South Bend Tribune
