  • The Naragon Barn, built in 1908 and a well-known icon at Potato Creek State Park, will be demolished this fall for the new lodge construction—local groups are urging officials to preserve the historic red barn despite its poor condition and high repair costs.  WSBT
  • Last night, downtown First Fridays in South Bend celebrated fall with pumpkin carving, an Oktoberfest event, and soccer on the gridiron for the Global Cup kickoff—Michigan Street between Washington and Wayne was closed to traffic—while festivities ran from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.  WSBT
  • The St. Joseph County Public Library held a panel discussion titled 'Providers on the Frontline: Upholding Housing as a Human Right' where local experts explained tools and strategies to protect housing stability for vulnerable community members—Portage Township Trustee Jason Critchlow highlighted the available housing assistance through the township office.  ABC 57
  • Notre Dame's men's and women's basketball teams hosted the first-ever Irish Jam on Eddy Street today from noon to four, offering free mini tournaments, games, prizes, and live music.   • The South Bend Branch of the NAACP hosted its 42nd annual Hazel B. Hunter Scholarship Luncheon at Four Winds Casino Friday afternoon — community leaders and educators gathered to celebrate education and awarded five students thousand-dollar scholarships.  WSBT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Bend Fire Department is promoting Fire Prevention Week by hosting First Fridays in Downtown South Bend with fire trucks and hands-on safety activities for kids and adults to learn how to keep their homes safe, especially with lithium-ion batteries. Assistant Fire Chief Derek Erquhart said residents can learn to use approved products and proper charging methods to avoid hazards+.  WSBT
  • South Bend’s Special Events Committee approved Kite Realty’s permit for Saturday Notre Dame home football games including today—this permit lets Kite Realty close part of Eddy Street and authorize off-duty officers to remove disruptive individuals to ensure safety. The decision follows complaints about blocked sidewalks and aims to boost safety during game days.  ABC 57

SPORTS NEWS

  • After a nail-biting finish in the Wild Card series, the Chicago Cubs advanced to the NLDS and fans in South Bend are preparing for the playoffs as the Cubs Den at Four Winds Field ramps up selling official postseason caps — players like PCA, Nico Hoerner, Ian Happ and Matt Shaw will soon wear them on the field. Retail leader Mary Lou Pallo said the store expects a busy weekend as demand grows along with the team's playoff push.  ABC 57
  • On Friday, Notre Dame hosted its first Irish Jam basketball event at Eddy Street Commons where players from the men’s and women’s teams competed in three on three contests and shooting drills.   • Local teams from Northridge, South Bend Saint Joseph, and Penn had a strong first day at the IHSAA girls golf state finals Friday at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel — Northridge scored 336, Saint Joseph scored 346, and Penn scored 355. The final round will be played today.  South Bend Tribune
  • South Bend and Michigan high school football games will take place tonight with key contests including the Vikings—5-0 hosting Three Rivers—4-1, the Kingsmen—6-0 traveling to Rice Field against Elkhart—4-2, and the Huskies—3-3 facing South Bend Riley.
