COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Families enjoyed the Pumpkin Plunge event hosted by three YMCA's of Greater Michiana (last Thursday night) when kids jumped into the pool, picked pumpkins and decorated them at a craft station (starting at 5 p.m.).  WSBT
  • Hamilton is a three year old orange and white tabby cat described as feisty, mischievous, and loving who is available for adoption at Pet Refuge in South Bend. He is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on his shots (vaccinations) and is poised to bring playful energy to his new home.  South Bend Tribune

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Freudenberg Residential Filtration Technologies will move operations to Lebanon by December 5th — cutting 173 jobs in LaPorte as it works with local workforce agencies to help affected workers. A Michigan company will also cut 178 jobs soon.  WSBT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • ABC57 reported from La Casa de Amistad on Wednesday that bilingual FAFSA workshops helped teens and parents learn about the FAFSA process and tuition costs. Additional sessions are scheduled for Nov. 5, Nov. 12, Dec. 3 and Dec. 9 — organizers say the events will support local families in planning for college.  ABC 57
  • ABC57’s Brian Conybeare interviewed YouTube’s Safety Engineering Program Manager Angela Nakalembe to explain the risks AI poses to children both academically and emotionally — she warned that such technology could harm learning and well-being if not properly managed.  ABC 57
  • South Bend Community School Corporation, Oaklawn, and the Paramount Health Data Project received funding from the Valinhos Foundation to launch a mental and physical health support program aimed at improving academic achievement in elementary and middle schools. The program runs through June 2026 — it includes educator training, expanded mental health services, and regular partner reviews to gauge progress.  ABC 57

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • At the second annual National Sustainability Society conference held at Notre Dame’s campus this week, local leaders and researchers met to share ideas on sustainable practices to improve South Bend’s environment. Society President Dan Brown explained that organizers used carbon offset programs — such as meatless food options and local composting services — to reduce the event’s footprint and guide future efforts.  ABC 57

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Bend drivers face two road closures for water work as the road at 620 N. Saint Joseph St., which closed on Oct 22, will remain closed until Oct 29 and a road near 501 W. South St. will close on Oct 28 until Nov 4. Detour routes include East Navarre, Riverside and East Bartlett Streets — both projects are part of ongoing infrastructure improvements.  South Bend Tribune

HEALTH NEWS

  • The 525 Foundation held its sixth annual Say Boo to Drugs Trick-or-Treat event where families gathered for music, food trucks, and vital drug misuse resource sharing. Local law enforcement and advocacy groups provided drug disposal kits and promoted Drug Take Back Day—tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at several community sites.  ABC 57
  • Dr. Michael Pfeiffer at the South Bend Clinic said that shorter fall days can make it tougher to sleep and may worsen sleep apnea, so he advised a regular sleep routine and limiting screen time while avoiding coffee in the evening (like using CPAP devices if needed).  ABC 57

SPORTS NEWS

  • Notre Dame football's running back duo, Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price, have scored 23 combined touchdowns and gained 1,848 all-purpose yards in seven games — outpacing more than 100 college teams in rushing scores. They show strong support for one another as they prepare for the game against Boston College on Nov. 1.  South Bend Tribune
  • Notre Dame's point guard Sir Mohammed is set to return for the 2025-26 season after recovering from a knee injury and other setbacks. He changed his number from 4 to 13—showing potential to be a key secondary handler and shot maker as the team prepares for its season opener against LIU Brooklyn on November 3.  South Bend Tribune
