- ➤ South Bend's Board of Public Safety set Halloween trick-or-treating hours as 5–7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 31—keeping the same schedule as past years—and Indiana State Police issued safety tips for families to follow. South Bend Tribune
- ➤ South Bend Police Department & South Bend Cubs are hosting the annual Cops & Goblins treat night at Four Winds Field from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today, offering kids a safe night of trick-or-treating and a costume contest. WSBT
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Miss South Bend and Miss Elkhart County pageant will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Leighton Auditorium where contestants compete in interview, talent, evening gown and onstage question categories; winners will advance to the Miss Indiana and Miss Indiana’s Outstanding Teen competitions as part of the official Miss America preliminary circuit. - ➤ Mishawaka Common Council approved an ordinance on Monday allowing the Midwest Shooting Center to build a 13,000 square foot facility near Bremen Highway — city leaders plan to work with St. Joseph County on easing traffic concerns as residents worry about safety on Elmwood Avenue. WSBT
- ➤ Local leaders in South Bend urged officials to use $4.8 million from city savings to help 20,000 residents and federal workers who may lose food benefits this Saturday, Nov. 1 — they asked the city council to hold an emergency meeting this week. Mayor Mueller said only Congress can end the shutdown, while local groups pressed the city to use its $92 million reserves to keep families fed. ABC 57
- ➤ Drivers in Mishawaka will face delays this week as the railroad crossing at East Jefferson Boulevard between Division Street and North Cedar Street is closed for repairs and resurfacing by crews from the Canadian National Railway— a detour directs vehicles to East McKinley Avenue via Byrkit Avenue and Main Street, with work expected to finish October 31 weather permitting. - ➤ Clocks in South Bend and across the nation will be set back one hour on November 2 at 2 a.m. when daylight saving time ends for 2025—legislators are still debating a permanent change. South Bend Tribune
