ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ South Bend Public Works will start a leaf collection program in early November to remove fallen leaves from streets and storm drains so that they do not clog catch basins. Nate Bosch from the Lilly Center for Lakes and Streams said too many decomposing leaves add extra nutrients that may lead to harmful algae blooms—residents are urged not to dump leaves into gutters or local streams. - ➤ South Bend local Lakeesha Perkins has been in Montego Bay since October 23 sharing updates as Hurricane Melissa strengthens over Jamaica—she remains nervous and prays for her family’s safety as the storm worsens. Her resort holds briefings on the life-threatening weather while she continues to document critical changes on social media. WSBT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Patriot Railroad closed the rail crossings at Cedar Trail and Apple Road north of McKinley Highway in St. Joseph County for replacement work—crews will remove and replace the crossings. Motorists must use posted detours along Ash, Birch and Bittersweet for north/south traffic and along Day Road, Edison Trail and McKinley Highway for east/west traffic, and work is expected to finish November 1. - ➤ Notre Dame freshman quarterback CJ Carr has led his team in seven games with over 1,800 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, and only four interceptions—earning the trust of teammates and coaches as he climbs into the nation’s top-20. - ➤ No. 12 Notre Dame football will visit Boston College on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN to secure a 10-2 record for a playoff chance, and key players such as guard Sullivan Absher and DT Elijah Hughes will lead the effort — while Boston College relies on Sedarius McConnell and RB Turbo Richard to boost their defense.
