COMMUNITY NEWS

  • South Bend’s historic WUBS Radio station unveiled a colorful new mural titled 'Beloved Community' on Thursday. Children from the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Indiana painted the design to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision of unity — the project was led by Joseph Luten with local partners along Lincoln Way West.  WSBT
  • Thomas Lynch, known as The Mayor of Walnut Street — a local legend — was honored Thursday morning when Walnut Street at the corner of Dunham and Walnut was renamed Honorary Tom Lynch street near his Corner of Champions gym. Mayor James Mueller and community members celebrated Lynch's legacy, noting his service as a Marine, professional wrestler, and Mr. Indiana.  WSBT
  • Trick-or-treaters filled Four Winds Field Tuesday night for the popular Cops and Goblins event where the South Bend Police Department and South Bend Cubs hosted a safe Halloween celebration. Capt. Kyle Dombrowski said he looks forward to a larger turnout next year—he noted the event's growing popularity—and expects the tradition to continue enriching local community spirit.  WNDU
  • Family service center LifePlan is offering free baby food to families facing hardship during the government shutdown and paused SNAP benefits at its three locations in Benton Harbor, Niles, and South Bend — the program is designed to help those in need during these challenging times.  ABC 57

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Better Business Bureau advises consumers to verify data breach notices by contacting companies directly—then immediately change passwords and enable multi-factor authentication. It also recommends closely monitoring bank and credit statements—reporting any unauthorized transactions to help prevent identity theft.  South Bend Tribune

CULTURE NEWS

  • Studebaker National Museum will host the free Guitars & Cars event on November 12th at 897 Thomas St.—doors open at 6 p.m. and live performances by Richard Gilewitz and guest Tim May will begin at 7 p.m.  South Bend Tribune
  • The History Museum in South Bend will host the Rockne, Art & Technology event on November 9 at 2 p.m. where live demos will show the creative process from sketch to sculpture, and a panel discussion led by Paul Kamish will explain how technology is used in art at the Rockne: Life & Legacy exhibit.  South Bend Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • South Bend Schools hosted a Showcase of Schools on Wednesday that let families meet teachers, staff and principals and learn about education opportunities. The event also featured a trunk-or-treat (a fall tradition) for children.  WSBT
  • Resurrection Lutheran Academy held a groundbreaking and blessing ceremony yesterday for a major expansion project to add nine classrooms, a cafeteria, a resource room, a music room and a teachers' lounge. The school, which is off Nimtz Parkway (just west of the Bypass), plans to use the extra space to better serve its 120 students and provide specialized attention.  WSBT

FINANCE NEWS

  • South Bend Financial Empowerment Center now offers free legacy planning services to help families protect their assets in a new program partnered with the city and the Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund. The center is located at (MLK Dream Center, 1522 Linden Ave.) and offers in-person, virtual, or phone appointments (open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays).  South Bend Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Railroad crossings at Cedar Trail and Apple Road in eastern St. Joseph County are closed for repairs - drivers must use detours via Ash, Birch and Bittersweet roads for north and south travel and Day Road, Edison Trail and McKinley Highway for east and west travel. The crossings are expected to remain closed through Saturday if the weather stays clear.  WNDU
  • South Bend will start its fall leaf pickup program Nov. 3 with crews collecting leaves by zone; residents must set piles free of sticks and trash on their tree lawns by 6 a.m.—weekly collections will run through Nov. 28 and burning leaves is prohibited.  South Bend Tribune

SPORTS NEWS

  • Notre Dame football ruled out wide receiver Jaden Greathouse for Saturday’s game at Boston College after he suffered a right thigh/hamstring injury that will sideline him for four games—officials said his healing is a top priority. The team also listed defensive back DeVonta Smith as questionable with a right calf strain—backups including team captain Will Pauling and freshman Dallas Golden will step in.  South Bend Tribune
  • Notre Dame football will play Boston College tomorrow (Chestnut Hills) at 3:30 p.m. and the Irish, on a five-game winning streak, are heavy favorites with their strong running game and early scoring style to boost their CFP bid.  South Bend Tribune
