ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Hotels in St. Joseph County are filling up fast as construction work and local events push room rates higher — hotels are already about 60 percent full and travelers are urged to book early for events like the Notre Dame football game. Jeff Jarnecke of Visit South Bend Mishawaka said the trend affects the entire region with nearby counties also seeing rising demand. WSBT
- ➤ Indiana farmers face uncertainty as high input costs and low returns on corn and soybeans lead some to add specialty crops and invest in research to cut costs. Purdue budget figures show that crop returns are about a dollar below production costs while local soybean growers are waiting for a possible purchase from China. WSBT
- ➤ St. Joseph County is experiencing major economic growth as projects from GM/Samsung, AWS, and Microsoft—two of the largest investments in Indiana—are creating high-wage jobs and prompting efforts to upgrade local infrastructure while officials address traffic and water concerns. The County Council will vote on a zoning proposal for a new data center on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m.—a move that could further boost local investment—after community input is considered.
