Good morning, South Bend. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 8th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Guidance Ministries is asking the community to help fix its broken boiler because half the building is now cold with winter on the way — this may stop vital food and clothing services. Pastor Lori King said repairs cost about $12,000 and help is needed to keep services running through the holiday season.  WSBT
  • Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity members are spending three days outside in freezing weather to raise supplies and funds for homeless locals in South Bend; donations, including winter clothes, food, toiletries and cash, can be made at the Calvin Johnson State Farm office on Jefferson Boulevard until 3 p.m. on Sunday.  WSBT
  • Downtown South Bend held the 'YESvember' edition of First Friday yesterday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. — organizers offered free fitness classes, clay ornament workshops and more for residents to try new experiences.  WSBT
  • At a Bremen Fire appreciation dinner, firefighter Tim Kulczar retired after 38 years and trained the next generation of firefighters—an Elkhart company will donate more than 30,000 lbs of food to feed people in need across Michiana.  WNDU

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Yummy Bowl opened at University Park Mall on Nov. 4 in Mishawaka, taking over the old Flat Top Grill space to serve Mongolian stir-fry and sushi to local diners. The new restaurant now offers a fresh dining option for mall visitors.  South Bend Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kate the Chemist closed out her free science exploration series finale at the Eck Visitors Center last Friday by hosting a family event — with games, demonstrations, and candy giveaways — that drew local interest. She will host a Christmas lecture at the Century Center on November 19 — where winners get a day in her lab coat — to offer a unique chance to experience science up close.  WSBT
  • Jenna Freymuth from Adams High School was voted South Bend Tribune Student of the Week for Nov. 3 by local readers. She is a dedicated IB senior who leads Spanish clubs and manages a rigorous academic schedule, standing out among nominees from several local schools.  South Bend Tribune
  • Bethel University in Mishawaka held its first Future Educator Day on November 7 to show local high school juniors and seniors what a teaching career is like. Students toured the campus, met education professors, and learned about a unique language certification that may make them eligible for a $2,000 visit scholarship for Fall enrollment — a step toward starting in education.  WSBT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Notre Dame basketball beat Detroit Mercy 102-70 Friday at Purcell Pavilion — six players scored in double figures and the team had 19 assists — in a game that shows promise for the new season under Coach Micah Shrewsberry.  South Bend Tribune
  • Notre Dame's top freshman wing guard Jalen Haralson did not play in Friday’s home game against Detroit Mercy because he was on concussion protocol after a hit above his eye in his season debut—sophomore Sir Mohammed started in his place.  South Bend Tribune
  • Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love has rushed for 894 yards and 11 touchdowns this season as the team, now ranked number ten in the college football playoff rankings, fights for a playoff spot. If he stays healthy and Notre Dame wins its last four games, he could boost his +4000 odds to win the Heisman and bring the trophy back to South Bend.  ABC 57
