COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Food Bank of Northern Indiana will distribute free frozen turkeys to households in need via drive-through events in six counties starting November 11 as part of WNDU-TV’s Turkeys on the Table Challenge. Households can receive one turkey while supplies last at sites including North Judson United Methodist Church, Knox United Methodist Church, and Ivy Tech in South Bend — schedules vary by location.  South Bend Tribune

CULTURE NEWS

  • South Bend and surrounding communities host a range of events this week including holiday concerts, theatre shows, and artisan bazaars from Nov. 10 to 16 — local churches are accepting pre-orders for kieflies for pickup on Dec. 6.  South Bend Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • North High School’s marching band, the Green Brigade, won first place in Class B at the ISSMA state finals held Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium — earning its second state title in three years.  South Bend Tribune
  • The South Bend School Board voted at 5:30 p.m. Monday night on a deal with the National Education Association that provided teachers a $9,000 raise over two years—adding more sick leave and personal development pay.  WSBT
  • P-H-M Schools approved a new teachers agreement Monday night in Mishawaka that raises starting pay to $50,000 and maximum salaries to over $86,000. The contract also offers a $650 stipend for effective teachers and a 2% increase for those coaching or leading extracurricular activities — it runs through June 2026.  WSBT
  • Purdue Polytechnic High School South Bend will host a free community event on Nov. 13 at 5:30 p.m. at the Boys+Girls Club at 502 E. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Sunday's heavy, wet snowfall led to power outages affecting thousands in parts of Berrien and St. Joseph counties—crews worked on Monday to restore power for about 1800 I&M customers. I&M had aimed to complete restoration by 11 p.m. Monday—forecasts of extra snow and strong winds threatened additional outages.  WSBT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The South Bend Common Council approved a seven-year tax abatement on Monday for Michigan Motorsports — a Niles company that will invest $4.5 million to build a 50,000 square-foot warehouse, distribution center and showroom on the northwest side.  WSBT
  • Indiana Gov. Mike Braun declared Winter Weather Preparedness Week and INDOT officials unveiled a new maintenance facility off State Road 23 near the US-31 bypass to speed up winter road maintenance in St. Joseph County—plow trucks got hot starts and made brine on site to double the capacity of the old Mishawaka garage. Officials urged drivers to slow down and give crews extra room on slick roads.  WSBT
  • Officials announced that 11 Indiana counties, including St Joseph, had issued travel advisories after snowfall began on Nov 9 and continued through Nov 10. Drivers are urged to check local conditions and use caution when navigating the roads.  South Bend Tribune

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Data from Realtor.com shows that in August the median home price in St. Joseph County climbed to $215,000 from $212,500 in July and is 10.9% higher than last August—single-family home prices rose 2.4% while recorded sales jumped 46.7% to 729 homes, totaling $98 million in sales.
