COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Portage Township will host a holiday meal giveaway on Dec. 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. at its office on Columbia St.—families can receive one of the 150 hot meals, which include ham, side dishes and dessert, and children will also get a small gift while supplies last.  South Bend Tribune
  • South Bend Civic Theatre will host ‘Breakfast with Santa and Friends’ in its main lobby at 403 N. Main St.—the event is set for Saturday, Dec. 6 at 9:30 a.m. and Saturday, Dec. 13 at 9:30 a.m. and noon. Youth performers will entertain as Metro Diner provides a buffet, holiday crafts are led, and families enjoy meet-and-greets with Santa, Mrs. Claus, Elsa, and Olaf.  South Bend Tribune

  • Value City Furniture in Mishawaka is closing after its parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy – only select stores and the website will remain open while gift cards are not accepted at closing sales.  WSBT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The South Bend Museum of Art will host Holiday in the Gallery on Dec. 5 from 5 to 8 p.m. at 120 S. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd with free exhibits and live music by Fischoff Chamber Music Academy—this event will also include a holiday art market featuring unique handmade gifts that support local artists—sponsored by The Art League.  South Bend Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in LaFayette Falls met Tuesday night at a town hall to voice safety concerns over construction of more than 100 new houses, as the single neighborhood entrance raises issues with construction traffic and emergency access — local officials noted the meeting followed a recent major accident at Kern Road.  WSBT
  • On Nov. 12, the St. Joseph County Council passed a resolution to protect Portage Manor—an historic property valued for its natural and cultural significance after years of local cleanup and community input. St. Thomas More Academy offered to invest between $5 million and $7 million to renovate the building into a school while a new nonprofit announced plans to preserve the surrounding land.  South Bend Tribune
  • St. Joseph County engineer Sky Medors said a patch will be put in Thursday so the Mayflower road bridge will open temporarily Friday—its complete repairs are set for spring after an inspection flagged an issue with the Ardmore trail approach slab. The project, which began over a year ago to replace two superstructures over Ardmore Trail and the South Shore rail lines, addresses corrosion concerns and aims to improve public safety.  WSBT

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Three affordable housing projects in South Bend moved forward after the state awarded federal tax credits—one project includes 50 units at Donald and Main Streets, another adds 42 units on the northwest side, and the third will provide 180 affordable apartments on West Chippewa Avenue. A timeline for the projects will be announced after the tax credits are finalized.  WSBT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Plymouth High School football head coach Adam Handley was fired after four seasons with a 12—30 record as the board voted 3—2 on December 2. His termination, effective November 10, came after a 4—7 finish following a 6—5 winning season in 2024, and the Rockies never secured a sectional win under his leadership.  South Bend Tribune
  • On December 2, three South Bend area high school boys basketball players were named to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame's 2026 Silver Anniversary Team for their high school achievements 25 years ago. Brandon McKnight, Andrew Laird and Nick Otis were honored after excelling on the court and moving on to college and professional play.  South Bend Tribune
  • Swiss Valley, a popular Michiana ski and snowboard destination, is under new management and will offer upgrades such as direct lift access with RFID gates, tripled snowmaking capacity, and new magic carpets for beginners. The resort will open the weekend of December 5 to provide more trails and an improved beginner area for a better winter season.  WSBT
  • Notre Dame football is set to sign most of its 2026 recruiting class today, with major recruiting sites ranking the class in the top five (according to consensus ratings) and expected signees including defensive end Rodney Durham, tight end Ian Premer, and safety Joey O’Brien. Recruits will begin signing their letters of intent at 7 a.m. ET (a key moment for the program’s future).  South Bend Tribune
  • Notre Dame basketball won its marquee home game on December 2—decided by a last-second 3-pointer from Cole Certa—to beat Missouri 76–71 at Purcell Pavilion. Markus Burton led with 18 points as the team now prepares to travel on Friday to face TCU in Texas.  South Bend Tribune
