COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The first veteran moved into Mishawaka Troop Town last weekend as the community project begins offering stable housing for those who served. Leaders say his move marks a promising start toward filling the remaining seven homes for veterans.  WSBT
  • Transformation Ministries held its annual Christmas store on Saturday to serve local families with gifts, meals, and educational resources. The nonprofit received a $35,000 grant from Casa Herbalife Family Foundation (supporting the event) and engaged about 100 volunteers to help the community.  WSBT
  • Last summer, Burton's Laundry, Laundry One, and Dexter Laundry helped the Humane Society of St. Joseph County by donating two new industrial washers (40 lb washers) and offering free facility use until installation. The new units are now installed, enabling the society to better care for over 3,000 animals yearly.  WSBT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Councilman Oliver Davis received documents from local farmers that hint at a speculative 300-acre data center near the ethanol plant — though city officials say the concept is unconfirmed and clarity is needed for future decisions.  WSBT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Multiple holiday concerts are scheduled this week from Dec. 15 to 21, featuring events at Michigan City Public Library, Blue Gate Performing Arts Center, and South Bend Scottish Rite & other local venues.   • Marian High School Head Football Coach Mike Davidson, who coached the Knights for 16 years (including eight as head coach), retires to spend more time with his family. The school said it will use his guidance during the search for a new coach.  ABC 57
  • Terry Elkins of Mishawaka High School was chosen by Tribune readers as Student of the Week for Dec. 8 (nominees included a student from NorthWood High) and next nominations will be announced on Monday.  South Bend Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Portage Township Trustee will file a formal complaint with the Indiana Attorney General's Office today regarding Karl King Tower after residents have been without heat for weeks; he aims to secure improvements for local renters.  WSBT
  • Indiana Family and Social Services Administration has extended open enrollment for the Healthy Indiana Plan & PathWays programs through Dec. 24 to give eligible Hoosiers more time to select coverage. Members transitioning from MDwise plans will also have a 90-day window to change plans if needed.  ABC 57

SPORTS NEWS

  • USA Today Network Indiana’s basketball poll shows Kouts as the new No. 1 in Class 1A after reaching the semi-state championship last season — Bloomfield fell to fourth after losing to Bedford North Lawrence. The rankings were released on Dec. 15.  South Bend Tribune
