COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ YMCA members at downtown South Bend will have to wait to use the pool as leaks found during final checks delayed its opening. The pool will reopen in June after specialized contractors complete repairs — ensuring the facility is safe for use. WSBT
- ➤ South Bend residents will soon have access to new affordable duplexes built by Inner City Development with help from community groups and the city—each duplex offers two bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and space for two families—and officials say the project is part of a broader effort to revitalize local neighborhoods. - ➤ Two South Bend churches, St. Casimir and St. Adalbert, will consolidate into one parish to unite finances, strengthen ties, and reduce administrative work. Pastor Ryan Pietrocarlo said mass schedules remain unchanged and the consolidation becomes official July 1—signed by Bishop Rhoades. WSBT
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Morgan Weatherholt, a Concord senior and Indiana Tech softball commit, was in a bad car crash when her car went off the road after a group of deer came on Beech Road in St. Joseph County. She suffered many injuries and was treated at Memorial Hospital—she is now recovering and hopes to return to softball practice soon. South Bend Tribune
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ An officer on the northwest side of South Bend saw a traffic violation near Olive and Roger Streets on Wednesday at 2 p.m. and chased a fleeing driver who brandished a firearm during his pursuit near Cottage Grove Avenue and Oak Street — a police dog later captured him and he now awaits charges at St. Joseph County Jail. - ➤ Ivy Tech South Bend-Elkhart increased its dentistry program capacity from 12 to 25 students to meet the rising need for dental hygienists, receiving over 100 applications each year. The program, which started in 2008, also runs community clinics that offer affordable care and hosts the Ivy Tech Impact Gala today at Four Winds Casino. ABC 57

- ➤ Indiana lawmakers ended their session on April 25 and sent all finished bills to Gov. Mike Braun—he can sign, veto, or let them become law after seven days. Braun has already signed over 100 bills, including property tax relief, but key proposals like a state budget with a cigarette tax increase and a higher I-465 speed limit are still waiting for his action.
