- ➤ South Bend police will increase their foot and ebike patrols in busy public spaces this summer to help prevent violence after two past summers saw over 100 gunshots at neighborhood gatherings. Mayor James Mueller urged residents to leave guns at home and report anything suspicious (a measure intended to keep gatherings safe). WSBT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Temple and Temple Excavating and Paving Inc. will close the right lane on northbound S.R. 23—between U.S. 20/31 and Renewable Rd—on or after June 9 for a culvert lining project; INDOT advises drivers to allow extra time and follow posted directions. ABC 57
- ➤ South Bend officials said the Ireland Road and Ironwood Drive intersection project will enter Phase Five as work on the southeast corner starts on or after tomorrow. Northbound Ironwood Drive traffic cannot turn right onto Ireland Road during this phase—detours are in place and the full project is expected to finish by early July, weather permitting. ABC 57

- ➤ Downtown South Bend Inc. will offer free fitness classes every Saturday through August 30 at the Gridiron at 122 S. Michigan St. This Saturday’s event on June 7 includes 8 a.m. Yoga, 9 a.m. Zumba, and 10 a.m. Boot Camp — participants must bring a small donation of canned goods or nonperishable items and wear proper workout attire. - ➤ Maurice Scott—who led the Washington girls to a state runner-up finish in 2009 with star Skylar Diggins, now a WNBA player—is the new boys basketball coach at South Bend Washington, replacing Ryan Varga. Scott spent over three decades coaching and most recently led South Bend Adams before returning to his hometown to guide the Panthers as they prepare for the new season. South Bend Tribune
- ➤ Notre Dame football—led by head coach Marcus Freeman and defensive coordinator Chris Ash—has eliminated the 'Vyper' role for defensive ends to let players cover both the boundary and the field flexibly. Sixteen defensive linemen are on the roster for 2025 and four signees will enroll on June 9 to boost team depth for the long season. South Bend Tribune
- ➤ South Bend honored Betsy 'Sockum' Jochum, the last founding member of the South Bend Blue Sox who died over the weekend at age 104, by holding a moment of silence last night before the South Bend Cubs game at Four Winds Field—services will be held on Saturday, June 7 at 2 p.m. at Kaniewski Funeral Home.
